Mixing metals:
Creating a layered look or a jumbled mix up?
You may have heard the adage of looking inside your wardrobe to figure out how to decorate your home. I am going to suggest for today’s purposes that you look at your watch or your jewellery instead. Do you wear gold or silver? Perhaps you mix it up? When I was a little girl, I was obsessed with my aunt’s Russian wedding ring, an intertwined trio of white, yellow and rose gold bands. Whilst this trinity of precious metals has religious symbolism, it is a great (and historic) example of successfully mixing finishes which can inform interior design choices today.
If you are renovating a bathroom or kitchen, you will quickly be faced with a question about the hardware finish; brass, chrome, nickel, copper, black, white, bespoke colour, the possibilities are endless! Some finishes are regarded as traditional choices (brass or nickel), whilst others may be seen as creating a modern look (chrome, black or coloured hardware) but a lot will depend on the shape and style of the hardware so my advice is to consider this aspect first.
Consider these ABI brass taps, and these Cast Iron Bath Company taps- the shape and style of the taps create completely different looks. Do you want a traditional, heritage look or a minimalist, architectural look? It might be argued that mixing styles is far more controversial idea than mixing finishes.
Once you have considered the shape and style of your brassware, you will need to start thinking about finish. Product availability and cost will obviously be a factor here but leaving that aside for a moment,
